The Pop-Up Cardboard Museum of Natural History from the Future
Lead artists: Kat Lynas & Hollie Notman Produced by: Aaron Bowman from Sidequest CIC
Imagine a future where animals have died out. Bad right? But, what if you had a chance to travel back in time and prevent such a terrible thing from coming to pass. Well, that’s what Maryam, our time-travelling eco-warrior, has done.
The Pop-up Cardboard Museum of Natural History from the Future has been travelling all over Teesside, inspiring children and families to look after the wildlife we have on our doorsteps.
The idea for this project started after my nieces had a trip to the National History Museum in London. I thought about how that is out of reach for a lot of children in Teesside. Then I created an illustration, which was the start of imagining what a project inspired by museums could be.
Bug Making Workshops
The Cardboard Museum of Natural History wouldn’t be the same without the contribution made from hundreds of children across Teesside who joined us to make bugs at festivals, museums and libraries. Their bugs, real and imagined, became exhibits in the museum.
The Cardboard Museum Installation
The Pop Up Cardboard Museum of Natural History from the future was created by myself and 3D artist Hollie Notman, with Aaron Bowman - senior Producer from Sidequest CIC. The museum features paintings by me and 3D cardboard art including animals and a time travelling console by Hollie, as well as lots of bugs and art created by children.
We worked with actor Maryam Ali, who performed a museum talk that I wrote, which tells the story of endangered and extinct animals and encourages children to think about ways they can help animals in their area. The museum is rooted in hope for the future, spreading a love for the natural world.
The Manifesto
To go with the installation I created a manifesto, this was to encourage people to think about pledges they could make to support local wildlife.
